Have just collected my Kindle. Only had it for an hour but am already in love. Am slightly worried about howmuch I might spend when I have the option to buy and instantly receive  so many books, but am currently going through all the free downloads like they're going out of fashion.

The browser option is pretty useful too, it's easier to navigate and view than my  mobile phone wbich is my otehr internet option when on hour long bus journeys.

In short so far am really happy I bought it, and that I paid the extra for 3G. Happy, happy....... Goes off to work out the best way to get fanfic onto it.

While not EXACTLY legal, you could try this... http://www.truly-free.org/ to save a bit of money (I've got a couple of copies of books I have on my shelf that are too big to carry!)

Now, I don't have a kindle... but I DO have a blackberry, and I learned to get Fanfic on it by: 1) Putting it in a Word Document and using the WordToGo feature on my bb. I will assume that a Kindle would have a similar word processing software either on it, or as an application? OR 2) If you have Microsoft Word, you can download a free add on that will allow you to publish any word documents into a PDF file. Do I assume right that the Kindle uses PDF?

I know my advice is kinda general, but, it ~might~ help.

Kindles can read PDF files.... now I don't actually have a PDF on the computer which can actually connect to the internet (stupid laptop wifi doesn't work, anyway...) but a little bit of trial and error and the kindle also reads txt files :0).

So far I have 17 fanfics safely stored and ready to read. Am loving my new toy.

I've had mine for a few days and it's already attached to my hand permanently. As to fanfic, I just drag and drop my .pdf files right into it. Then just make sure they're in Documents. You can also email your pdf file in and they'll convert it to Kindle format, but that costs money. They have a good explanation in the Help area. Happy reading.

I can't convert to PDF on my netbook, but kindle reads txt too so I am a happy bunny... the formating's not great so you're probably better staying with PDF unless it's a real hassle but not enough to detract from reading. I already 17 long fics on there and am planning for more.

Anyway I'm really happy with my new toy and am already addicted. I paid extra for the 3G too so I can read via the internet too if I want. Should make the hour commute each way on the bus more fun.

An hour commute on a bus? I'd be mental. It's bad enough having to wait 45 min for the doctor.

The only plus point is the hour to read or play on my kindle before work. The really annoying thing is if I could actually drive it would take me half an hour (at most) door to door. Really wish I had bothered to get my driving licence sometime in the last 12 years I've had to get round to it.

I'll have to admit that I don't know anyone over the age of 13 that can't drive. (f2f that is)

I've been promising myself that I will have learnt before I turn 30, that gives me.... 5 months, doable but well i've been intending to get round to it for a while and haven't

Do you drive at all? Or have you never been behind a wheel? Are there driving schools there?

I started to learn at 18 but then stopped when went off to university. Honestly it hasn't really been a problem until this last year, when studying and then working at Uni's a car's actually more trouble than's it worth. It's easier (and cheaper) to walk, parking at both the universities I studied in (and later worked for) was like gold dust, you had to live miles away or be very senior to qualify (and what's the point in driving if you have to park in a side street at almost the same distance as your house is anyway).

There are driving schools here, but learning has got so expensive in the last .... decade (wow where did the time go?) an hour's lesson used to about 15 pounds and now it's more like 30. And I'm the sort of person who will need a lot of lessons to become even close to competent.

I do understand that but I'm so American. *g* The local junior college has huge parking lots and every student has a car. Most don't live on campus and so they drive in from all over. The students who live in married student housing often have two cars.

I converted 30 pounds to dollars. Thats $50!! Wow!

It's not cheap and it will probably take me a lot of lessons.

I love I can carry loads of books around in one. I'm like a kid in a candy shop... or a bibliophile in a library :0)
