I think Methos is so popular because he is a more ambiguous character than Duncan, he's fascinating because of all the things we don't know about him and the hints of his past. Duncan is basically Duncan all the time, dark quickenings and demons aside, he has grown and become more sophisticated over the years but he is basically the same person. Methos is a chamelion he's Adam Pierson, Benjamin Adams and Death to name but a few and really they don't have much in common so you are left to wonder who he really is. Plus he's sarcastic and loves messing with his friends heads, for their own good of course. Which makes him such a fun character (though perhaps not main heroic character material in a TV series).
