and now I shall ramble on about my 'canon' anime pairings

I have been rediscovering different anime fandoms I haven't read in a while and it got me thinking about my (slightly obsessive) pairing choices, I have come to realise I don't much mind about the main pairs it's the 'canon' pairings of the other characters I am totally inflexible about. So just because otherwise I'll be thinking about it all day I thought I'd post and ramble on about it.

Although I have a definite preference  for 1x2 I really don't mind who Heero or Duo are paired with (so long as it is well written) I enjoy either (or both) of them with Wufei for example. 2xH, not a favourite but OK. The only exception being I have a wild (and irrational) dislike for 1xR, though I enjoy friendship fics for them.
Only one thing: Quatre and Trowa are clearly a couple. I am unmovable about this, you can break them up (whether temporarily or  permanently) kill one of them off, whatever you like, (though happily together will give me a nice warm happy feeling). Just as long as you remember they are the loves of each others lives, even when they are only a small side story in your fic or barely mentioned at all. Otherwise I get all upset and sulk for  the rest of the day :-).

In Ouran high school host club Mori and Hunni belong together. I really don't mind who the other characters are paired with, if they're all after Haruhi, all gay or a midway point but Mori and Hunni remain the focus of each others worlds.... Why? Because I said so, I must have my stable couple in my fics.

Prince of Tennis- I like almost any pairing you care to mention (unless it involves Sakuno who irritates me beyond all sense, she's so wet, now Ann I like) there is one exception - and this is very important - the golden pair is a must. They are clearly in love and of all of them are the only pairing I really believe will last (after all how many people actually stay with the person they loved when they were 14). If  the silver pair appear they should also be together because they're so cute and sweet together and.... Anyway *clears throat* remember that Eiji and Oishi belong together, so there.

Bleach- I have come to realise I don't actually care about any of the main characters at all. My inner Bleach fangirl is more interested in the various Shinigami characters from soul society. Hitsugaya is the closest to a main character of my favourites. I like Hitsugaya & Matsumoto and the 11th division four, Ukitake and Shunsui (BTW those last two definitely belong together) and Hisagi Shuhei. my pairings here are a bit more fluid (except where the Captains are concerned) but I do love to see Yumichika and Ikkaku together :-).

Well anyway I'm not sure what this says except I like my steady long-term established couples (well as established as they can be when we're talking about teenagers or people who have just met, or teenagers who've just met). Actually this post is mostly pointless and probably sounds like I'm trying to tell people what to write *winces* not my intention. The funny thing is when it comes to TV series fandoms like Highlander and Mag 7 I'm all about the main characters and really couldn't care less what who the minor characters are paired with. I'm also more likely to support a het pairing than I am in anime fandoms, I think that probably has something to do with the way girls are portrayed in a lot of animes.

I know in my heart that 3x4 is forever but I LOVE Duo with Trowa - I can't help myself! Oh, and Duo with Wufei. Oh, and Heero with Trowa. Ummmmmmm.... And now and again, if it's really well written I'll go for Heero/Quatre. OK then, I'll admit it - the only thing I don't read is Duo/Quatre.

Heresy!!!! ;0)
I just love my 3x4 it's like comfort food except without the food (and washing up). There's just something about those pairings that are implied in the series.

Of all the other pairings for them 1x3 and 2x4 are actually the two I could see, (though just as a temporary thing until Q and T find each other). Though I am not totally unpersuadable for the occasional well written exception, but I mourn 3x4 all the way through.

I'm right there with you when it comes to GW and Ouran, though I really don't like seeing them broken up and character death does bad things to my emotional state.

I like to see happy fics for them (it's like comfort food), but a little bit of bittersweet angst can be fun sometimes too.

I don't mind angst, even heavy angst as long as there is resolution and moving forward. Unending pain does very bad things to my emotional state and the well being of my furniture.

I'm always surprised when people don't have OTPs in fandoms they've been in for a long time. ^_^ I tend to be your opposite, though. It's the main characters I usually feel more compelled to pair up in OTPs than the minor characters, except when there's a large cast (like PoT, Bleach and Naruto).

It's fun to analyze our preferences. ^____^

Ukitake and Shunsui (BTW those last two definitely belong together)

You won't get any arguments about that from me.

Who else would put up with Shunsui's wandering eye for millenia without becoming insecure?

[identity profile] misanagi.livejournal.com 2009-09-15 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm way more OTP for the Golden Pair and Honey and Mori than I'm about Trowa and Quatre. I think I've read every pairing for them but TQ always tugs deeper for me, though I do have a big weakness for Heero/Quatre.

Ukitake and Shunsui (BTW those last two definitely belong together) So, so, true.

Of them all GP is the one I'm least flexible about. It makes me so sad when they aren't together, they belong with each other ... they synchronise :0).

What I find most interesting here is that the couples you mention (all in fandoms I'm part of? wtf's up with that?! soul-mates much?) those are the couples that I watch the show for!

I write 3x4. Not that I don't enjoy a good 1x2 or any other equation (I've been known to like a good 1x3, too, with the knowledge that T hasn't met Q yet... WHAT! It's what I like! Lemme'lone)

I also wrote golden pair fic, and I love to read silver pair fic (Have you ever read "learning to land?" epic AWESOME, by the way).

I also, don't write for Bleach, eventhough I highly enjoy the series, but if I had to pick, I would say Renji and Rukia with the whole childhood friends thing, but it's less stable, so therefore I don't write it. And also, writing het is just...less interesting to me, eventhough I'm a heterosexual myself. I don't know, it's just what I like *shrug*

Another series I like is supernatural, where the brothers are such a perfect couple, as well, and I would totally attempt to write for that.

I happen to be a huge fan of Doctor Who, but I have never, ever even THOUGHT of writing fic for it. Why? Because there's no one there that seems RIGHT for the fic. No one. I love the show but I'd never consider to write for it.

The pairs that you point out here really struck me, because they ARE cannon couples in the broadest of senses. None are actual couples in the series (ex: Jack and Ianto in Torchwood. Are a couple. I don't write them.) but they have moments of extreme 'togetherness' that seem to separate them from the rest of the cast. And that is what fascinates me so, I think.

Thoughts?

but they have moments of extreme 'togetherness' that seem to separate them from the rest of the cast.

That's what attracts me to them I think, the relationship just seems to be there for everyone to see and it is what makes me want to watch the show in the first place.

I'm with you on writing het, I quite enjoyed writing Sally and Wufei but that's the only het pairing I've ever written and it was filled with slash couples. I think part of the problem is that so few female characters are as well developed as the male characters, and het relationships are so often shown and explored it doesn't feel like they are missing and need to be added by fanfic.

I've only written a couple of drabbles for Dr Who but I am always quite tempted by crossovers for him, like you I don't really feel drawn to write much about any of the canon characters (maybe I'm just happy with the canon?) but add them to characters from other shows I like and.... :-) plotbunnies.

[identity profile] salamandere.livejournal.com 2009-09-15 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)
i agree with you on 3x4. I think it's obvious that they're a canon pairing, as they should be :)
sometimes i enjoy 1x3, but i don't see any emotional connection beyond friendship, really, and i think a relationship between them would be for convenience alone. that's just me :)

i really can't see 1x4, i don't know why, or 2x4...i think i just feel too much that quatre looooves trowa ;D
really i'm a 1=2 all the way :DDD

and poor wufei is almost always left out :p

i don't watch any of those other shows, so i have no opinion 8D

I can totally believe 1x3 in a 'they are friends and they have sex but they both know Trowa is in love with Quatre' way. It is something so in character for them both particularly early on in the series.

Quatre's totally besotted, completely and utterly, and I don't think he's the casual sex type so I sort of agree with you though if he did it would probably be with Duo.

Poor Wufei, though I did love Maldoror's 1x5 fics (and her(?) 2x5 fics for that matter).

[identity profile] cozzybob.livejournal.com 2009-09-15 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Heeeee!

I can see where you're coming from with GW, and occasionally, I share the sentiment--but I really don't have any OTP's in it, which is pretty ironic, considering I've been involved with it for so long. I more or less OTP characters. For example, these days, I prefer reading anything about Duo, just as I did when I had a Zechs stage. I'll read pretty much anything involving Duo, just as long as he's in it somewhere. Haha! And it pans into all my fandoms that way, because I do the same thing with Spike in BTVS, Snape in HP, and A/Hallelujah in G00. That doesn't mean I don't read other characters... I do, and enjoy them, but mostly I itch towards my favorites first.

I wonder if anyone else OTP's that way? Is that even an OTP? *thinks*

OTC ???? :0) I definitely have favourite characters but I go through phases. I get all obsessive about a character (like Duo, or METHOS) and then I'll have a break from the fandom for a bit and suddenly want something different (Trowa fics for example and um still Methos). These 'canon' pairings are my only true constant and even with them I will occasionally be seduced by good writing into reading something different.

[identity profile] cozzybob.livejournal.com 2009-09-16 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Hee! I like that, OTC. Well, if changing your characters in phases doesn't count, maybe I don't ahve an OTC either. xD Because I've gone through a lot of character phases--started Quatre, then Heero, then Trowa, then Zechs, then random OZ people, and now Duo. Hee! It'll probably be Howard next week. :P

I agree that sometimes you find a constant pairing to go back too--I did that in BTVS and other fandoms, but for some reason, I can't in GW. I like 1x2, I like 3x4, I like 6xD and RxD and 2xR and 5xS and a million other pairings too--I guess I just can't make up my mind. ^^

That's just because there's so many awesome combinations ^_^ in GW

[identity profile] darthanne.livejournal.com 2009-09-15 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I've got further OTP the longer I've been in fandom especially where 3x4 is concered. I used to dabble in other pairings but not anymore. I just don't see these guys with anyone but each other.

I also have less of a tolerance level for angst than I used to, especially relationship angst. I tend to read and think no they wouldn't do that, and it does a number on my emotional state. I prefer my angst to come from something outside and they work together through whatever it is. I still like a good whumping, but there has to be teh comfort as well as the hurt.

Sadly, there's not as much 3x4 out there to read as there used to be, especially new stuff that is actually worth reading. *sigh*

Good happy 3x4 (or the other pairings I mentioned) fic is my comfort food (minus the food bit), it makes me all warm and fuzzy, although bittersweet fics with angst are great when I'm in that mood.

Most of the GW fic I used to read were Duo or Heero centric and I enjoy seeing the background 3x4 in them just knowing there they are and together makes me happy whatever else is going on. I have been getting more and more into 3x4 centric fics but any well written fic where they are together ^_^.

Any fic where they aren't together just makes me sad
