but they have moments of extreme 'togetherness' that seem to separate them from the rest of the cast.

That's what attracts me to them I think, the relationship just seems to be there for everyone to see and it is what makes me want to watch the show in the first place.

I'm with you on writing het, I quite enjoyed writing Sally and Wufei but that's the only het pairing I've ever written and it was filled with slash couples. I think part of the problem is that so few female characters are as well developed as the male characters, and het relationships are so often shown and explored it doesn't feel like they are missing and need to be added by fanfic.

I've only written a couple of drabbles for Dr Who but I am always quite tempted by crossovers for him, like you I don't really feel drawn to write much about any of the canon characters (maybe I'm just happy with the canon?) but add them to characters from other shows I like and.... :-) plotbunnies.
